Platforms like arXiv and PLOS have demonstrated that freely available papers can achieve comparable citation rates to subscription-based ones. Moreover, preprint servers accelerate the dissemination of findings, allowing rapid response to emerging crises such as pandemics.
Critics, however, warn that open-access publishing often shifts costs from readers to authors through article processing charges, potentially disadvantaging independent scholars and under-resourced laboratories. The debate thus continues over how to balance accessibility with sustainability in scholarly communication.
