Phần đọc hiểu Ocean Acidification and Marine Ecosystems

Recent research in marine chemistry has documented a troubling phenomenon: the rapid acidification of the world's oceans. Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the surface waters of the open sea have experienced a 30 percent increase in hydrogen ion concentration, corresponding to a decrease of approximately 0.1 pH units. The primary driver is the absorption of atmospheric carbon dioxide, which reacts with seawater to form carbonic acid. The consequences for marine organisms are profound. Coral reefs, often described as the rainforests of the sea, are particularly vulnerable. As pH levels fall, the calcification rate of reef-building corals slows significantly, threatening the structural integrity of entire reef systems. Shell-forming organisms, including pteropods and certain plankton species, also struggle to construct their calcium carbonate shells in more acidic conditions. These biological disruptions cascade through marine food webs. Pteropods, for instance, serve as a primary food source for commercially important fish species such as salmon and herring. Declining pteropod populations could therefore destabilise fisheries that millions of people depend upon for protein and livelihood. Understanding these interconnected processes remains a central concern of contemporary oceanographic research.
