The result, he warns, is a kind of conceptual dilution that can undermine the rigor of the resulting work. Professor Mehta offers a historical perspective on the matter. She reminds us that today's celebrated interdisciplinary fields, from cognitive science to bioethics, were once viewed with deep suspicion by traditional departments. Patience, she suggests, is therefore essential for any scholar attempting to build bridges between disciplines.
