Last summer, I spent two days in a small village near Sa Pa with a local family. My friend Linh had recommended the homestay, saying it was a great way to experience life in the mountains. I was a little nervous because I had never stayed with strangers before, but the family welcomed me warmly. On the first day, we walked through terraced rice fields and visited a small waterfall. Our guide, Mr. Hai, told us about the planting seasons and how the villagers grow different crops at different altitudes. I learned that the terraces were built by hand more than a hundred years ago, and they are still used today because the land is too steep for machines. In the evening, the family cooked a traditional meal with grilled fish, sticky rice, and wild herbs. We sat around the fire and listened to folk songs. Before I went to bed, I realized that the best part of the trip was not the scenery, but the kindness of the people I met.
