For decades, biologists operated under a fundamental assumption: that the DNA sequence inherited from one's parents rigidly determines biological destiny. However, the emerging field of epigenetics has fundamentally challenged this paradigm. Epigenetics refers to chemical modifications, such as methylation, that alter gene expression without changing the underlying DNA sequence. The implications of epigenetic research are profound. While pharmaceutical companies are investing heavily in epigenetically-targeted therapies, critics caution that the complexity of gene regulation renders simple interventions ineffective. Moreover, ethical concerns regarding the heritability of environmentally-induced changes complicate policy decisions.
