Welcome to today's lecture on the psychology of learning. I want to discuss three key principles that can dramatically improve how effectively you study.
The first principle is spaced repetition. Research shows that reviewing material at increasing intervals — say, after one day, then three days, then a week — leads to much stronger long-term memory than cramming everything in one session. This is sometimes called the spacing effect, and it was first documented by German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus in the 1880s.
The second principle is active recall. Instead of passively re-reading your notes, you should test yourself on the material. Close your book and try to remember what you've just read. Studies have shown that this retrieval practice strengthens neural pathways and makes information easier to access later. One effective method is using flashcards, where you write a question on one side and the answer on the other.
The third principle might surprise you: sleep. During sleep, your brain consolidates memories, transferring information from short-term to long-term storage. Research at Harvard Medical School found that students who slept after learning new vocabulary remembered 20 percent more words than those who stayed awake. This means pulling an all-night study session before an exam is actually counterproductive.
Now, let me also mention the importance of interleaving — mixing different topics or types of problems during study sessions. While it feels harder at first, interleaving forces your brain to constantly retrieve different strategies, which builds stronger problem-solving skills.
