Word Formation — Hậu tố tính từ (Adjective Suffixes)

Các hậu tố tính từ giúp chuyển danh từ hoặc động từ thành tính từ. Trong đề thi VSTEP, việc nhận diện từ loại qua hậu tố là kỹ năng then chốt để làm đúng câu hỏi điền từ (word form).

1. Hậu tố -FUL (nghĩa: đầy, nhiều)

1	success	-ful	successful	thành công	She is a successful businesswoman.
2	beauty	-ful	beautiful	đẹp	Ha Long Bay is one of the most beautiful places in Vietnam.
3	wonder	-ful	wonderful	tuyệt vời	We had a wonderful time at the festival.
4	care	-ful	careful	cẩn thận	Be careful when crossing the road.
5	harm	-ful	harmful	có hại	Smoking is harmful to your health.
6	hope	-ful	hopeful	đầy hy vọng	We are hopeful about the future.

2. Hậu tố -LESS (nghĩa: không có, thiếu)

7	care	-less	careless	bất cẩn	The accident was caused by a careless driver.
8	home	-less	homeless	vô gia cư	The charity provides food for homeless people.
9	hope	-less	hopeless	vô vọng	The situation seemed hopeless at first.
10	use	-less	useless	vô dụng	This old machine is completely useless.
11	harm	-less	harmless	vô hại	The snake looks scary but it is harmless.

Lưu ý quan trọng: -ful và -less là cặp đối lập. careful (cẩn thận) ↔ careless (bất cẩn), hopeful (hy vọng) ↔ hopeless (vô vọng).

3. Hậu tố -OUS (nghĩa: có tính chất)

16	mystery	-ous	mysterious	bí ẩn	The mysterious disappearance puzzled the police.

4. Hậu tố -IVE (nghĩa: có xu hướng, có tính chất)

5. Hậu tố -ABLE / -IBLE (nghĩa: có thể)

6. Hậu tố -AL (danh từ → tính từ)
