Động từ khuyết thiếu (modal verbs) gồm: can, could, may, might, must, should, will, would, shall, ought to. Chúng đứng trước động từ nguyên mẫu (không chia), không thêm -s/-es ở ngôi thứ 3, phủ định thêm not ngay sau modal.
- can/could — khả năng, xin phép
- may/might — khả năng xảy ra, xin phép (trang trọng)
- must — bắt buộc, suy luận chắc chắn
- should/ought to — lời khuyên, nghĩa vụ nhẹ
- will/would/shall — tương lai, đề nghị, giả định
