Câu chẻ (Cleft sentences) là gì?

Câu chẻ là cách tách một câu thành hai phần để nhấn mạnh một thành phần cụ thể. Trong VSTEP B2, câu chẻ xuất hiện nhiều ở phần viết lại câu và Writing.

1. It is/was... that/who (It-cleft)

Công thức: It is/was + thành phần nhấn mạnh + that/who + phần còn lại.

a) Nhấn mạnh chủ ngữ (người)

Câu gốc: Nam broke the window yesterday.

Câu chẻ: It was Nam who/that broke the window yesterday.

b) Nhấn mạnh tân ngữ (vật)

Câu gốc: She bought a new car last week.

Câu chẻ: It was a new car that she bought last week.

c) Nhấn mạnh trạng ngữ thời gian

Câu gốc: He left yesterday.

Câu chẻ: It was yesterday that he left.

d) Nhấn mạnh trạng ngữ nơi chốn

Câu gốc: I met her at the park.

Câu chẻ: It was at the park that I met her.

e) Nhấn mạnh nguyên nhân

Câu gốc: She cried because she failed the exam.

Câu chẻ: It was because she failed the exam that she cried.

2. What... is/was (What-cleft / Pseudo-cleft)

Công thức: What + S + V + is/was + thành phần nhấn mạnh.

• Câu gốc: I need more time. → What I need is more time.
• Câu gốc: She wants a better job. → What she wants is a better job.
• Câu gốc: He said nothing. → What he said was nothing.
• Câu gốc: They did was complain. → All (that) they did was complain.

Cấu trúc Wish / If only là gì?

Wish và If only dùng để diễn tả điều ước không có thật — mong muốn điều gì đó khác với thực tế hiện tại, quá khứ, hoặc tương lai. Trong VSTEP, cấu trúc này hay xuất hiện ở phần viết lại câu.

If only = Wish nhưng mang sắc thái mạnh hơn, tiếc nuối hơn.

1. Ước ở hiện tại (trái với sự thật hiện tại)

Công thức: S + wish / if only + S + V2/V-ed (Past Simple)

Lưu ý: Với "be", dùng were cho tất cả các ngôi (I were, he were, she were). Đây là subjunctive mood.

2. Ước ở quá khứ (tiếc nuối về quá khứ)

3. Ước ở tương lai (mong muốn thay đổi)

Ba cấu trúc với "used to" trong tiếng Anh

Nhiều người nhầm lẫn ba cấu trúc này vì đều có "used to". Tuy nhiên, chúng có nghĩa và cấu trúc hoàn toàn khác nhau. Trong VSTEP, đây là dạng bài rất phổ biến.

1. USED TO + V (nguyên mẫu)

Nghĩa: Đã từng làm gì (thói quen/trạng thái trong quá khứ, nay không còn).

Lưu ý: Used to chỉ có thì quá khứ. KHÔNG có "I use to" hay "I am used to play".

2. BE USED TO + V-ing / N (Danh từ)

Nghĩa: Đã quen với việc gì (hiện tại đã quen rồi).

Causative form là gì?

Causative form (thể nhờ bảo) dùng khi ai đó làm việc gì cho bạn hoặc khi bạn khiến/bảo/cho phép ai đó làm việc gì. Trong VSTEP B2, causative hay xuất hiện ở phần viết lại câu và Use of Language.

1. HAVE something done (nhờ ai đó làm — không nói rõ ai)

Công thức: S + have/has/had + O (vật) + V3 (Past Participle)

Lưu ý: "Have something done" cũng dùng khi bị ai đó làm gì (trải nghiệm xấu):

• He had his wallet stolen. (Anh ấy bị mất ví.)
• She had her phone broken. (Cô ấy bị vỡ điện thoại.)

2. GET something done (tương tự have something done)

Công thức: S + get/gets/got + O (vật) + V3

• I need to get my watch fixed. (Tôi cần nhờ sửa đồng hồ.)
• She got her nails done yesterday. (Cô ấy nhờ làm móng hôm qua.)

3. HAVE / GET someone do/to do (nhờ ai đó làm — nói rõ ai)

Bị động: S + be made + to V

• The students were made to rewrite the essay.

5. LET someone do (cho phép ai đó làm)

Công thức: S + let + O (người) + V (bare infinitive)

• Her parents let her go to the party.
• Don't let the children play near the road.

Lưu ý: Let KHÔNG có dạng bị động. Thay bằng be allowed to:

• She was allowed to go to the party.
